Dear Parents

I am excited to work with your child this coming year. I have already learned a great deal about them and know that we will have a great year. They have shown that they are interested in learning new things and are anxious to work hard. I appreciate the support that I receive from you. I expect students to put forth the efforts necessary to grasp the concepts in each course taught. They should ask questions when they do not understand.

Homework:
Enough time is provided in school for students to complete all basic assignments. Students who work slowly, struggle to understand concepts, or get a grade of N on assignments or tests, will need to spend time at home working on school assignments. Students are expected to read 20 minutes a day, to practice times tables 10-15 minutes a day, and to study spelling words 10-15 minutes a day for any five days each week.

A homework packet will be sent home every Friday. Sometimes there will be a worksheet to practice in math or language. Up coming test dates and study guides will be attached. Test scores will be on the homework packet. A spelling word list for the upcoming week will be attached. A reminder of any school or classroom event will be written. This sheet is to be signed by the student and parent then returned before the following Friday. You can also access the homework packet on my web site.

Tests:
Tests may be returned to the student the same day or within three school days. Tests may be retaken if the student does not earn a passing grade.

Grades:
Letter grades will be given only in Language Arts Reading, Language Arts Composition, Math, Art, Music, Science, and Social Studies. Grades on tests and assignments will generally be figured on the following percentage of correct answers.

100-93 A
92-90 A-
89-87 B+
86-83 B
82-80 B-
79-75 C+
74-70 C
65-69 C-
Below 64 N

Spelling grade is now included in Language Arts Composition. New subject headings and grading system has been created by Alpine School District.

Report Cards are sent home on November 5, January 21, March 25, and may 27. The final grade is an average of the 4 term grades and is entered in the permanent record.

Discipline & Citizenship:
The teacher is responsible for the general conduct of the students that will create an atmosphere of learning. Problems of discipline are to be discussed in cooperation with parents. The principal is informed of all serious problems as outlined in the Mount Mahogany Reference Book.

Attendance:
School begins at 9:05 a.m., and students are expected to be in their seats. Students who miss a day are expected to find out what they missed (ask another student, talk to us) and complete the assignment within a week. Students who miss consecutive days are expected to meet with me before school, after school, or during class (if convenient) to review assignments and receive an assignment due date. For additional information see the Mount Mahogany Reference Book.

Materials:
All necessary supplies (pencils, paper, crayons, books, etc.) will be furnished by the school. Each child is assigned a number and is responsible for all supplies with that number (including rulers and scissors as well as books). Supplies that are broken, damaged, or lost will be paid for or replaced by the student. Each student is expected to have two sharpened pencils everyday.

Textbooks:

  • Social Studies: Several different approaches will be used: worksheets, tests, oral reports, and contract units. Each student is expected to learn the fifty states and capitals, and to memorize the Preamble. The text is United States by HBJ.
  • Science: Students will be involved in as much hands-on activities as possible.
  • Language: I will be working on grammar as well as the writing process. The text is Language Arts Today by Macmillian/McGraw-Hill
  • Spelling: Spilling lists are sent home every Friday. The text is Literacy Place.
  • Math: Skills that will be taught are data analysis, computation, visualization, estimation, problem solving, critical thinking, patterns, and number sense. The text is Investigations.
