Welcome to Second Grade

Disclosure Document

Dear Parents,

The Second Grade will follow the Utah State Core in all subject areas. To view a detailed version of the Utah State Core, please refer to www.usoe.k12.ut.us.

The Programs we will be using are as follows:

  • Reading - Scholastic Literacy Place curriculum, along with Balanced Literacy components.
  • Math - Investigations
  • Spelling - "Spelling Paragraph" program developed by Dr. Floyd Sucher. For a more detailed explanation please refer to the spelling packet.
  • Handwriting - Zaner-Bloser manuscript writing.
  • Rotations - Students will rotate among the Second Grade teachers. Each teacher will be teaching a Science or Social Studies Unit as per the Utah State Core Curriculum.
  • Book Orders - Book orders will be given throughout the year. There is no obligation to buy books. If ordering please make checks payable to each individual book company. Please Do Not Send Cash.
  • Birthdays - We will celebrate each student's birthday. Treats may be sent for the entire class. If treats are to be sent they must be purchased from the store.
  • Attendance Policy - Alpine School District attendance policy recognizes that regular attendance at school helps students learn. Frequent absences disrupt the instructional and learning processes. Lost instruction is difficult to regain. The process of education requires a continuity of instruction, class participation, learning experiences, and study.
    1. Students are expected to be at school on time. (9:00 am)
    2. Early arrival is discouraged (before 8:45 am). School ends at 3:30 pm. Students should leave immediately after school. Supervision is not provided before or after school hours.
    3. Parents taking children from school during the day must go to the office to check them out.
    4. No student will be kept after school without prior parental approval
  • Grading Policy - Grading is done according to overall personal improvement of academic areas, how hard a student works to complete assignments, neatness of the work done, preparedness on a daily basis, and testing of concepts taught.
Grading in language arts: reading; language arts: composition; math; and content (which includes science, social studies, health, and p.e.) will be done using the following criteria and the following percentage scores:
    93-100% Outstanding O
    90-92% Outstanding (-) O-
    83-89% Satisfactory (+) S+
    75-82% Satisfactory S
    65-74% Satisfactory (-) S-
    0-64% Needs Improvement N
      Pass P
      No grade -
  • Discipline - The "Behavior Habits" for our classroom are as follows:
    1. Attention Signal - Students "freeze" when they hear or see it.
    2. Self Start - Students begin work independently.
    3. Silent Orderly Movement (S.O.M.) - Students move in a silent orderly manner.
    4. Inside Voice - Students use a quiet voice at all times when in the building.

All students are expected to be polite, kind, and considerate to each other. If a student fails to follow class rules, he or she will miss privileged activities. Parents will be notified of any serious behavior problems.

We are looking forward to a successful year with your student.

Thank You
Second Grade Teachers
