Principal's Message

I would like to inform you that Mount Mahogany, under the guidelines of the No Child Left Behind Act, achieved AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for the 2006-67 school year. To achieve AYP status our school needed to meet criteria in 40 specific areas involving reading and math. Specifically speaking of math, our whole school math achievement level increased by two percent from the previous year, 2005-06.

This is the fourth continuous year that our school has met AYP requirements and I would like to compliment our staff of highly qualified teachers for their hard work in providing a quality education for our students and you, as parents, for your continued support with our efforts, which makes this achievement possible.

Our school also met the requirements to make adequate yearly progress as it relates to the Utah Performance Assessment for Students (UPASS). Our school's overall status was acceptable with an overall progress rating of high.

I feel that one factor that is assisting us in our achievement is the collaboration time that our faculty and staff utilize on Early Out Monday.

With collaboration our efforts address these three essential questions: (1) What do we expect students to learn? (2) How will we know what they have learned? and (3) How will we respond to students who aren't learning?   We address these questions by specifically analyzing student achievement data, planning instructional interventions, looking at subgroups and individual students, determining curriculum strengths and weaknesses, aligning instruction to state core, using data to develop individual and group goals, etc.

Also, as you are aware of, there will be an upcoming bond and leeway election for Alpine School District in November. There will be an informational meeting for all patrons on Tuesday, October 3 rd at PGJH at 7:00

Kindergarten

September has been a busy month in Kindergarten. We've been learning letter names and sounds. We are practicing writing our names. We've been exploring math manipulatives, counting, and recognizing numbers. We have established our Kindergarten rules. Every child is expected to follow the rules. Consequences are applied for good and bad behavior. We appreciate all your support in our efforts to make school a successful experience for your child.

First Grade

We have had a great beginning already. Please have your child read to you each night. The Take-Home Reading Program will begin soon. Our field trip is Wed. Oct. 27. Please have your child here on time to school that day. They will need to dress warm. Coat, good shoes, and long pants. Halloween will be celebrated with a Halloween party in each classroom at the end of the day. Children must be able to put on and take off their own costume for the school Halloween parade. Teachers will not be applying students' make-up. Just a warning that if the costume is worn to school, they still go out for recess. If it is an extra special costume, you might choose something they can play in.

Students will be rotating to different first grade classrooms for 30 min. 3 times a week for six weeks starting in Oct. Each teacher takes a subject to teach the student. This way the students get used to all of the first grade teachers and the students really enjoy this. Don't forget to have your student bring their coat. It is cold outside and we still have recesses outside.

Thanks a bunch,
First Grade Teachers

Second Grade

Hooray for school!   Many thanks to those of you who came to Back to School night and who have already done so much for your second graders and their classes!   September has been a busy month as we've settled into some great learning routines. We've started our spelling paragraphs and are well into our math unit, Mathematical Thinking at Grade 2. We had fun celebrations on Sept. 26th, Johnny Appleseed Day, and we're excited about our farm field trip on Wed. Oct. 4th!   If you are still interested in making a donation to your child's class, you are welcome to do so!   Donation money goes toward field trips, classroom supplies, portfolios, art projects, and Christmas and Mother's Day gifts. Thank you for all you do!

Third Grade

Stalactites, stalagmites, and bats, OH MY!   These are some of the science terms third graders studied in connection with the Heat and Light Unit we just completed. We had fun making coral gardens, stalactites, and s'mores. Our culmination activity was a hike to majestic Timpanogos Cave. The park rangers showed us many unusual formations such as helectites, cave coral, and flowstone while telling us interesting stories related to the cave. The parental participation was overwhelming. Thanks to all 36 participating adults who trekked up the 3-mile trail with us.

We are starting our third grade rotations this week. The topics for this month are Map Skills, Native Americans, Art Appreciation, and Prevention Dimension. In connection with our study of Healthy Lifestyles, the third graders will get to visit the Macy's of Orem store next month. The Utah County Health Department sponsors this valuable program to reinforce the importance of eating five fruits and vegetables each day. We have many great projects and activities planned this year!

Sixth Grade

Welcome back to school. First, we'd like to welcome Mrs. Hunt to Mt. Mahogany and more importantly to 6th grade. Last year's class had 75 6 th graders. This year we have 103--so, we now have 4 classes. We look forward to working with Mrs. Hunt and getting to know her (we'll ask her to write a little about herself next month). By the time you read this we will have already had our first rocket launch. Don't worry if you missed it, we'll have another one in the spring. In Math we're working on factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers. All these concepts will help us greatly when we start on fractions, decimals and percents. In Science we're studying the Moon and in Social Studies we finished the Ice Man and have started into Ancient Civilizations. We are looking forward to another great year in 6th grade! P.s. Our NOVA program, which usually begins in the fall, will begin in January this year and run until May.

Also, the Cookie Drive is coming!   For everyone who is eagerly waiting, we will be selling Otis Spunkmeyer frozen cookie dough from Oct. 4-11. All Student Council members will have an order form. Let's have a great year!

Computer Lab

It was exciting to come back to school this year and have brand new computers in the lab for the students to use. And we are putting them to good use already, jumping in with both feet and taking off for the new year.

We will be doing a fundraiser in October to help cover the cost of software and equipment for projects in the lab. This year we will have the Happenings books available for purchase. They will go home with your student on October 17th and all orders will need to be returned by October 27th. If you would rather make a donation to the lab rather than purchase a book, that would be welcome.

Keep an eye out for great things coming from the computer lab.
