Principal's Message | Kindergarten | First Grade | Second Grade | Third Grade School Evacuation and Emergency Procedures We have changed the location of our alternative evacuation site for the school in case the need for complete evacuation should ever occur. First of all, students would assemble on the east grounds of the school according to their class and grade level. Then, if needed, our alternative site to assemble would be Pleasant Grove Junior High School, 810 North 100 East, Pleasant Grove. The former location was the LDS Garden Stake Center located at 1028 West 1000 North in Pleasant Grove. We are moving to the junior high because they will be in a better position to provide assistance. We would also contact the transportation department to see if they could support transportation needs. In the event of a major disaster, during regular school hours, all teachers and staff members would remain at school to care for students until picked up by parents or authorized individuals. Students who ride the bus would be delivered to their normal bus stops. If they didn't have access to their homes or emergency homes they would be delivered back to the school until picked up by parents or authorized individuals. At the beginning of the year an emergency release form was included in the packet of information that was sent home. This form lists individuals who would be authorized to pick up your child(ren), if you as the parent were unable to do so, in case of such an event. If you have not returned this form would you please do so as soon as possible. Additionally, we have practice evacuations and other emergency drills (intruder, lock down, fire, earthquake, etc.) periodically during the year so staff members and students we will be familiar with correct procedures. As of to date we have had one fire drill and one intruder lock down drill. Both drills went well and all students and teachers responded in the appropriate manner. Also, I would like to remind you of the Bond and Leeway vote on Tuesday, November 7. Mr. Westover Student Testing Changes for Academic Studies Testing for identification and placement of this year's 6th grade students into Alpine School District 7th grade Academic Studies has been scheduled. Academic Studies courses are designed to meet the needs of students who master academic skills easily and who need more challenge than is offered in a regular class. An informational flyer will be sent home with every 6th grade student listing indicators for parents and students to consider when looking at the possibility of Academic Studies placement as being a "good fit." In order to have more current test data for applicants, and to bring uniformity and consistency in placement, all student applicants will be given an above grade level alternative form of the IOWA Test of Basic Skills. This will extend the testing time to three and one half hours. Applications will be available from the front office of every elementary school beginning Monday, October 30, and must be submitted by Friday, November 10. For your planning, both morning and afternoon testing sessions will be offered on Saturday, Nov. 18, and Saturday, December 2. Further testing specifics will be included in the informational flyer. We want to thank all parents who came to Parent Teacher Conferences. We appreciate being able to meet with you. Many THANKS to our room mothers and parent volunteers who went on the Kindergarten field trip. We had a lot of fun at the Hee Haw Farms going on a hay ride, hunting for a pumpkin in the pumpkin patch, learning about animals and getting lost in the corn maze! In November we will be learning about the first Thanksgiving Pilgrims and Indians. The Kindergarten classes are going to eat lunch in the lunch room on Monday November 20th. The price for each student lunch is $1.50. Lunch money will need to be paid to the teacher by Wednesday November 15th. Please send your child's lunch money in an envelope with his/her name on it. During November, we will continue working on letter names and sounds, counting, making patterns, writing letters, numbers, and our names. We appreciate all the time and assistance you give your child working on these important skills at home. Thanks!!October was a busy month in the first grade. We appreciate all those parents who attended SEP's and enjoyed discussing your child's successes and goals. With the holidays coming we want to remind you again of how important it is that you continue reading with your child, studying spelling words, and returning homework. Report cards will be coming home on Tuesday, November 21. Remember that if there is not a grade by a certain standard, that means that we have not taught it yet and it will be graded later on. Don't forget to mark your calendars for our First Grade Christmas Program on Thursday, December 14. Thanks for all you do and have a great month! The Second Grade would like to thank all of the wonderful parents who made our class Halloween parties fabulous. We all had an enjoyable time during the costume parade and Halloween parties. October was a great month! On November 1st, we attended the Pleasant Grove Junior High performance of Aladdin. The play was fantastic. In our classes this month we will be working on: letter writing in Language Arts, sorting and classifying in Math, and Thanksgiving traditions in Social Studies. We will also have a Thanksgiving feast in our classrooms during lunch on Thursday, November 16. The school cafeteria will be serving a turkey lunch with all of the trimmings. We will take our lunches back to our classrooms where we will practice eating with our best manners. If students choose to have a home lunch that day they will still be able to participate.
Mr. Miner's and Mr. Dominguez's classes are focusing on "production time" for the Christmas Store. (Students should be making their products this month.) Student involvement will include job applications and management positions. The Christmas Store's Grand Opening will be on Monday, December 4th, at 1:15 in Mr. Miner's room. The store will be open in the afternoon of December 4th and will remain open through December 6th. Mrs. Parry's and Mrs. Jensen's classes are preparing for the Wax Museum of Famous Americans. Monday, November 20th, will be the day students give their oral reports to their classmates. Students will present their Wax Museum on Tuesday, November 21st, from 9:20 until 11:45. (Students will need to be in full costume for that morning.) 5th graders are currently involved in rotation activities with other teachers. Mr. Dominguez is teaching earth science and physical/ chemical changes. Mr. Miner is helping students learn movement and fitness concepts with a square dancing unit. He also teaches a genetics unit. Mrs. Parry is focusing instruction on electricity and magnetism. Mrs. Jensen teaches having students learn to live a healthy lifestyle. She also instructs the students to play recorders. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending the Christmas Store and the Wax Museum.By the time you read this we will have had another super successful Halloween carnival. Thanks so much to the room mothers who coordinated and helped out with the planning and booths. There would be no carnival without you. Please mark Nov. 15 on your calendar. We are going to the BYU planetarium for a science presentation. We'll also tour the World Fair to get ideas for our 6th grade fair later on in the year. We're asking for a $3 donation to cover the costs of the buses and planetarium fees. In Math we're moving on to our first fraction, decimal, and percent unit. In Science we're studying the solar system and in Social Studies we're studying about Ancient Egypt. Be sure to keep reading daily. Finally, remember MARS MILLENNIUM IS COMING!!! (Ask your student about it.) Canned Food Drive! November 13-17 Student Council is collecting canned food for the Utah Valley Food Bank. Please send as many cans as possible between Nov. 13-17. Do no send anything bulged or rusted. Your cans will be counted towards your class total and the class with the most cans will receive a root beer float party. Let's beat last year's record of 4051 items!I want to thank everyone who has helped with the Happenings fundraiser for the computer lab this year. Every little bit helps. As always, things are busy in the computer lab. Kindergarten is always excited about all the new things we are doing. Right now they are working with number games. First and second grades are also working with math and language activities on the computer. Third grade is really working hard on keyboarding and I am very impressed with how well they are doing. They all remember to sit up straight and have learned the home row keys very well. We will be adding a few new letters each week until they have learned the whole keyboard. Fourth, fifth, and sixth grades are reviewing their keyboarding skills right now and will soon be moving on to other things. |
