Principal's Message | Kindergarten | First Grade | Second Grade | Third Grade We need to project what our upcoming kindergarten enrollment will be for next school year. Therefore, if you were unable to attend kindergarten registration on February 27 you can still register. If you have a child who will be five years of age on or before September 1, 2007 and will be coming to kindergarten at Mount Mahogany, would you please contact the school as soon as possible? Also, if you have neighbors who will have their first child entering school next fall, would you please convey this information to them? Also, our school will be selecting a new math program for next year. A district committee comprised of educators and parents have been working throughout this year to find a text that will best compliment the district's philosophy of a more balanced math approach and best meets the state's core curriculum. Schools throughout the district will select from two programs that have been recommended by the district committee. A school committee that is comprised of teachers, PTA and School Community Council Members, will make the decision of which of these two programs we select. On March 14, from 6:00 - 8:00, our school we be hosting a math night. Dr. Damon Bahr, from BYU, will give a presentation on balanced math and it's components. Following Dr. Bahr's presentation parents will have the opportunity to engage in math activities with teachers. Also, on March 13, Alpine School District will begin using an automated phone system called ParentLink to help inform you about student attendance and other important messages. We will be sending specific information about this program at a future date. February was full of fun with our "One Hundred Days" party and Valentines. We appreciate all the parent volunteers who helped make these days great. We were able to do mid-year assessments and DRA testing with all of our Kindergarten students in February. Thanks to parents for coming to parent-teacher conferences to see the great progress your children have made. They are amazing. Please continue to help your child learn the upper and lower case letters and the letter sounds if they do NOT know them. If your child is reading, please practice reading in the PTA books and other books at home. Home support is essential in order for children to read at the expected level by the end of Kindergarten. We would like to thank all the parent volunteers who take time to come weekly to exchange our PTA reading books and the many other things you do to support your child's education. It requires a team effort to facilitate great learning and we appreciate all your support.
A big THANK YOU to all parents/guardians who helped with and supported our Second Grade program. Feeling the excitement of the children and seeing an auditorium filled with their loved ones, truly made it "A Wonderful World". Would you like to keep your child's "Program Shirt" the vibrant color it is right now?! A staff member at out school said if you wash the shirt in a small load of cold water with about one cup of white vinegar, it will set the color--FOREVER! (However, if there are any stains on the shirt, it will also set the stains.) Just a reminder that we are planning for the children to wear their "Program Shirts" again at the Dance Festival in May. On Monday, March 12th our 2nd Graders will be presenting the theme of "Citizenship" at the "Student of the Month" assembly. We would like the children to wear a white shirt and blue (or dark) pants on that day. Any interested parents/guardians are welcome to attend. The performance will be brief (about 10 minutes) and it will be held at 9:30 A.M. in the lunchroom. MATH: Throughout the month of March we will continue to work on solving story problems and double-digit addition/subtraction. Please continue to practice math facts up to 18, doubles (2+2, 3+3, etc.), and combinations of ten with your child at home. Third grade is proud to annouce that our play of the "Little Mermaid" is under way. The parts were assigned this week, so if you have any questions contact the classroom teacher. Mark you claendar for Wednesday, March 21st at 6p.m. for this wonderful play from under the sea. At the end of the month there will be a kite flying activity and a fieldtrip. Look for more information to come home about this soon. The fourth grade students started the month of February by introducing the character theme at the Student of the Month Assembly. Through songs and skits the students told the importance of being trustworthy. We've been reading biographies this month and have met a lot of interesting people. Our reading genre for the month of March is Folklore/Fairy Tales/Fables. In math we have been working with money, decimals, and adding and subtracting large numbers. We will soon be starting a new unit called Packages and Groups in which the students will be investigating the relationship between division and multiplication and will learn different ways to multiply and divide. Please continue to practice the multiplication facts at home with your child so he/she will be ready for this unit. It was wonderful to visit with you at Parent/Teacher Conferences. We appreciate all you do to help your fourth grader be successful in school. The 5th grade are getting excited about practicing for our Traveling Show. The Traveling Show will be on April 12th. There will be 3 performances, two during the school day and one evening performance. Please schedule this so your child will be a part of this exciting time! Parents are invited and encouraged to attend a parent volunteer meeting for the Traveling Show on Tuesday, MARCH 6th at 6:00 in the Media Center. We will discuss assignments for costuming, props, and coaching. We hope you will be able to attend! We will try to answer any questions you have. Fifth graders are completing their last rotation class for science. Students are also working on geometry or fractions/decimals/percents for math. Please remind your child to bring their coats or jackets as weather is still unpredictable. Please also remind your child to do their home reading. Congratulations to the following students for their outstanding Science Fair projects. They will be representing Mt. Mahogany at the district fair: Kelton Johnson, Tailor Hendricks, Erica Hammond, Kaden Hansen, Hailey Albrecht, Juan Uribe, Kolby Nelson, Kourtney Nehring, Melanie Anderson, Alyson Ewell, Ashley Huff, Brannen Silva, Wyatt Straus, Kyle Stewart, Zac Dawe, Desiree Short, Madi Nehring, Braken Park, Spencer Baker, Todd Naylor, Bryson Denney, Evan Taylor, and Tyler Belnap. Also, a reminder that World Fair is March 28th. The safety of your children is one of my top concerns. That is why internet safety is stressed so much in the computer lab. Before we do anything else on the internet each year, we review rules they should follow to stay safe on the internet. The number one rule I tell them is that their parents need to know everything they are doing online, every site they visit, every person they talk to, every email they receive. We also talk about not giving out any personal information and what that means. Ask your children about what they are doing online. Together we can help keep them safe. New A.L.L. Pilot to Begin for 3rd and 4th Grade Students Alpine District Gifted Services has been approved to begin pilot 3rd and 4th grade Accelerated Learning Lab (A.L.L.) classes for the 2007-2008 school year. These pilot magnet sites will be at Foothill Elementary for the south end, and Highland Elementary for the north end of the school district. Testing for identification and placement of current 2nd and 3rd grade students into next year's pilot 3rd and 4th grade A.L.L. classes has been scheduled. A.L.L. programs are designed to meet the needs of students who master academic skills easily and who need more challenge than can typically be offered in a regular classroom setting. A.L.L. classes move at a more accelerated rate and go into greater depth as well. The first week of March, an informational flyer will be sent home with every 2nd and 3rd grade student listing indicators for parents and students to consider when looking at the possibility of an A.L.L. placement as being a "good fit." Interested patrons should be aware that it does mean a commitment of qualifying students leaving their neighborhood school to attend the magnet site program, and parents will be responsible for all transportation. Applications for testing and parent referral forms will be available for downloading at the district G/T web site: http://www.alpine.k12.ut.us/depts/curriculum/Services/ GiftedTalented/ or from the front office of every Alpine School District elementary school beginning Monday, March 5. Applications must be submitted by Friday, March 30. For your planning, morning testing sessions will be offered on Saturday, April 7, at Highland Elementary, and Saturday, April 14 at Foothill Elementary. Further testing specifics will be included in the informational flyer. "We are excited to be able to now offer this additional service to our advanced level students in the younger grades," says Peggy Crandall, Coordinator of Gifted Programs and Services of Alpine School District.
