Principal's Message

I would like to inform you of how a decision is made whether or not students are kept indoors during certain days of the year based on climatic conditions. In the past, the district office would receive an email from the health department stating whether or not students should be kept indoors. That information was then forwarded to all schools throughout the district.

This is no longer the procedure. Now, each school in the district makes it's own decision. That decision is based on two things. First, the outside temperature and the Air Quality Index or (AQI). If the temperature is below 20 degrees we keep students indoors. If the (AQI) is between 101-105 we accommodate students who may have "sensitive needs" or if you prefer for them to stay indoors to avoid outdoor physical activities. If the (AQI) is between 151- 200 we keep all students inside. We monitor these two items throughout the day for change and variation.

Our spring Parent/Teacher Conferences will be on Wednesday, February 7 and Thursday, February 8 . We will send home specific information about conference times during the first week of February. Those of you, who have kindergarten students, will be given specific conference information through your child's teacher.

Also, Kindergarten Registration will be held on Tuesday, February 27, from 9:30 - 10:30 in the auditorium for all students who will be attending kindergarten at Mount Mahogany next year. Students must live within Mount Mahogany School boundaries. A child must be five on or before September 1, 2007, in order to attend kindergarten in the fall. This is a state law and no exceptions can be made. A birth certificate and record of immunization are required to complete the registration procedure. Children do not need to come with you to register .

We would appreciate it if you would share this information with neighbors whose oldest child would qualify for kindergarten next year.

If you are unable to attend that day please contact the school.

First Grade

Greetings from first grade! Rotations start up again and we will be learning map skills, our community helpers, the parts of a plant, the seven continents, the water cycle and about friends and family. All first grade classes will be having their Valentines Day parties on Wednesday, February 14th at 2:15. Please read with your child everyday! Reading in first grade is so important. The PTA take home books are a great program for our first graders. Make sure that you read everyday with your child! At this time of year, it is expected that your first grader be reading on a level 10. At the top of the take home book card is a number. If its a 10 or higher..... great. If not, then work extra hard to get your child to a 10. Reading everyday works!

Second Grade

The Second Grade is working on a program that will be presented Thursday, Feb. 22nd. We will have an evening performance at 7:00 p.m. for parents. We are looking for parental help with simple costumes and props. Look for a note that will be coming home from your child's teacher to sign-up. Also, watch for a class Valentine list to be coming home soon. We just finished our second Science and Social Studies Rotation and will continue with rotations through April. We are starting a very important unit in math called "Putting Together and Taking Apart." This unit teaches a variety of computation strategies and is a strong foundation for skills to be learned in the future. Please have your child to school on time unless they are contagious or sick. We are learning so much at this time of year that absences are hard to make up. We appreciate all the parents of our Second Graders and the support you give us!! Hope to see you at Parent Teacher Conferences on Feb. 7th and 8th!

Third Grade

Imagine visiting with such famous people as Walt Disney, John Kennedy, J.K. Rawlings and Anne Frank. These were the visitors that came to third grade on January 10th. Okay, so they were actually teachers dressed up as those people. We have been studying the interesting lives of many people. On January 31st, the third graders came dressed as a person of their choice and presented a poster in their honor. It was a fun day for all.

We have started new units for our rotations. They are simple machines, phases of the moon, ecosystems, and patriotism. The students are enjoying the many hands on activities.

The third graders have been waiting all year to find out what program we will be doing this year. We will be presenting "The Little Mermaid," on March 21 and 22. Information will be sent home regarding tryouts.

Fourth Grade

Happy 2007!! At the beginning of January, we started our study of science. We first studied the water cycle and learned how precious every drop of water is for our earth. In our current unit, we are studying rocks and minerals. Science is one of the subjects covered on the end of the year tests. Please watch for the study guides that will come home at the end of each science unit and help your child at home prepare for the tests.

We have started a reward program involving "Ram Bucks." Ram Bucks are given out to students during the day to reward good behavior, for receiving 100% on tests, and for turning in homework on time. Just as Ram Bucks are given out to reward good behavior, they can also be taken away as a way to gently teach expectations.

Our current math unit is entitled "The Shape of the Data." We are enjoying looking at data and organizing it in an easy-to-read fashion.

Fifth Grade

5th graders recently completed a fun space center field trip to Central Elementary. Not only did they simulate a mission into space, but they were able to study the stars in the planetarium. This experience helped us communicate with aliens, and also it helped us to study the evils of slavery.

Fifth graders are currently continuing rotation activities in science, health, music, and dance. Mr. Miner's and Mr. Dominguez's classes are learning about fractions. Mrs. Parry's and Mrs. Jensen's classes are completing division and beginning fractions. Our grade level will begin learning songs for the Traveling Show. A note will be sent out during parent/teacher conferences asking parents to volunteer for the costuming, dancing, props, and narration committees. We really appreciate our students' parents involvement.

Please attend Parent/Teacher conferences on February 7th and 8th (Wed. and Thurs.) They run from 4:00 until 7:15. If you have concerns taking longer than 10-15 minutes, please set up an appointment at a different date and time to discuss these with your child's teacher.

Please encourage your child to do home reading and to wear appropriate winter clothing. Thank you. We appreciate your support.

Computer Lab

New in the computer lab:

Second grade is working with the keyboard more, learning what Shift, Return, Delete, and the Space Bar do. Pretty soon we will start working with text formatting on a word processor.

Third grade is just about finished with our keyboarding unit. The final test will be given on February 21st. They are all amazing typers and I am very impressed with all of their hard work.

Fourth, fifth, and sixth grades have been learning about internet safety and how to find things they need on the internet. All of the sites they visit have been approved by me. Learning is a lot of fun.
