Principal's Message

One of our most valuable resources at Mount Mahogany are our school volunteers. Over the past six years, since our school was first opened, I have been amazed at the amount of time and energy given by our volunteers that have helped make our school a vital, harmonious, and a happy place to be.

Many of you serve or have served in a variety of ways.  A few of them include: working with the take home reading program, classroom and grade level programs, working one-on-one with individual students, and serving on various PTA committees.

Thank you again for your support and unending service. You are appreciated and important!

Also, I have available, certificates from Quarter's for Christmas that can be used to purchase shoes for children who are in need. If you know of someone who could be assisted with this need please contact the school.

As a reminder, a newsletter will not be sent home at the end of December. A calendar for January will be given when the students return from the holidays.

I hope all of you have a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten has lots going on in December. We will continue working on letter names and sounds, writing, and of course reading. We will participate with the school in the annual Christmas sing. We are very excited to have "Polar Express Day" this month. It will be held on Monday, December 18. The children get to wear their pajamas to school that day and we take an imaginary train ride to the North Pole. The day is full of fun Christmas activities and treats, we can't wait!

First Grade

The First Grade is busy learning songs and poems for our program, "It's Christmas." We are excited to perform for the students of Mount Mahogany on Thursday, December 14 at 9:30 a.m. and for our parents that evening at 7:00 p.m.

We would like the students to meet their teachers in the sixth grade hall at 6:45 so the evening performance can begin on time. We are asking all students to wear a white top and dark pants (Levis are OK). The girls may also choose to wear a skirt. You might also choose to have your student wear a dressier outfit for the evening and a more casual one for the school day. But please remember that the white top shouldn't have any pictures or words on it (PLAIN WHITE).

With all the holiday excitement, home reading tends to drop off in December. It is important to read with your child every day. Thanks to all of our wonderful parent volunteers who come to school and switch books in the PTA take-home library. Have a happy and safe holiday season!

Second Grade

The second grade enjoyed their Thanksgiving Feast and we are now looking forward to Christmas Around the World. Please watch your child's backpack for more information about Christmas Around the World. We will be visiting places such as Mexico, Spain, Italy, Germany, England, Africa and the United States. We will be starting rotations and will learn about weather, rocks, plants, animals, maps and health. In math we are learning how to sort and classify data.

Third Grade

A big thank you to all our parents who helped us with the gingerbread houses. We had a lot of fun and they turned out fantastic! This month we have planned many various rotations to teach our students about some of the International Christmas traditions we celebrate. Also, a little reminder that we will be doing our stocking stuffer activity on December 20. Please refer to your note and send an item that they can pass out to each member of their class.

Fourth Grade

We love December! Already we have been singing Christmas songs and reading "holiday stories", our reading theme for December. Fourth grade students are also working hard on a Christmas gift that will be a nice, creative, personal expression for their parents.

We finished our mountain men unit by making leather medallion necklaces and we are now studying Utah pioneers.

During our current math unit, we have used our "1,000 books" (10 pages of numbers beginning with 1 and ending with 1,000) as we add and subtract larger numbers. For the last activity of the unit we will put up a 10,000 chart outside our rooms in the hall to get a feel for yet larger numbers. We will study fractions in our next math unit.

We wish you all a very happy holiday season!

Fifth Grade

Mr. Dominguez's and Mr. Miner's classes would like to invite you to the 5th Grade Christmas Store on December 4th through 6th. The Grand Opening will take place at 1:30 on this day. Classes will sign up for a time to visit the Christmas Store during its opening! Please come and shop! It is located in Room 135 (Mr. Miner's room.)

Mrs. Parry's and Mrs. Jensen's classes would like to thank all of the parents for their help in getting ready for the Wax Museum! We really had a lot of fun! The students were hard workers!

Mrs. Parry's and Mrs. Jensen's classes will attend Central Elementary for the Space Center Experience on January 3rd. Mr. Miner's and Mr. Dominguez's classes will attend on January 10th. A note will be sent home in December to explain the event and to inform the parents of the donation for the cost of the experience.

Sixth Grade

We've been to Mars and back. We've explored our Solar System. We've been back in time to visit ancient Egypt and it isn't even Christmas yet! Our time in December is short, but we'll make the best of it. Please remember to read during the holiday break. Don't let those brilliant 6 th grade minds atrophy. A reminder that we will be going to Central Elementary to visit the Christa McAuliffe Space Education Center on Thurs. and Fri. January 4th and 5th (Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. Sumsion will go on Thursday and Mr. Thomas and Mr. Willmore will go on Friday.) This is our most expensive field trip and we are asking a donation of $6.00 to cover the costs of fees and buses. This trip is usually the highlight of the year for our 6th graders. Be sure to ask them lots of questions after this great adventure.

Student Council

We would like to thank everyone who donated to the annual Canned Food Drive. We beat last year's total for a new Mount Mahogany record of:  4316! That is 265 more cans than last year! Way to go! The Utah Valley Food Bank reports that our elementary generates the 2nd largest total in the entire valley, EVERY YEAR. You guys are the best!

The PENNY WAR is coming! We would like to announce that the 5th annual Penny War will begin on Monday December 11th and go through Friday December 15th. Every penny is donated to KSL's Quarters for Christmas, to provide shoes for the needy here in Utah. So bring your pennies and win the trophy for your class.
