Principal's Message

I would like to welcome Mrs. Cathy Gudmundsen and Mrs. Deanna Leetham as newly elected members to our School Community Council. They will join Mrs. Liz Bratt, Mrs. Nancy Gates and Mrs. Cindy Hill, next year’s PTA president, as patron representatives. School representatives, who serve on the council, include Mrs. Reay, Mrs. Bean, Miss Nevins and myself. Mrs. Gudmundsen will serve as the council chairman and Mrs. Reay will serve as the council’s vice chairman.

I would also like to inform you that beginning next year Mount Mahogany will no longer be considered a Title I school. Title I funding is based on a school’s free and reduced lunch percentage and our current percentage does not qualify us to be considered for Title I next year.

On April 5 at 7:00 pm members of the Board of Education will be at our school to host a spring community meeting. They will be discussing the role of public education in a democracy. Patrons living in the central portion of the district, which includes American Fork, Pleasant Grove and Lindon, are invited to attend.

Finally, if you were unable to attend our kindergarten registration you can still come to the office and register for next year. You will need to bring your child’s birth certificate and immunization record. The student must be five years of age on or before September 1, 2005. We are trying to establish our kindergarten numbers for next year and we would appreciate it if you could register as soon as possible if you have not already done so.

First Grade

This month we will be working hard to prepare for the end of the year testing. We will also be giving the final DRA reading test. It is very important that your child be here every day, on time, ready to work. Please continue reading with your child each day and practicing math concepts, such as time and money, whenever you have the opportunity. We appreciate all that you do and especially would like to thank all those who helped to make Teacher Appreciation Week special. Remember that Spring Break is April 20, 21, and 22. Have a great month!

Second Grade

March has been a fun and busy month in the second grade!

A big THANK YOU to all of the parents who helped to make Teacher Appreciation Week successful and fun for all of the 2nd grade teachers. We definitely feel appreciated!
The Easter Bunny made a surprise stop at our school and hid the hard-boiled eggs for our party! The students enjoyed a fun Easter egg hunt, while the Easter Bunny filled their baskets with candy.

Our final DRA reading test will be this month. Please help your student to prepare by having him/her practice reading their take-home-reading book aloud to a parent. We are also excited to go on our final field trip this year to the Bowling Alley on April 19th.

Have a wonderful Spring Break and, enjoy your time off!

Third Grade

The third grade teachers have such awesome students and parents! We want to thank all of you for the wonderful lunches, cards, and gifts we got for teacher appreciation week. We especially love the door decorations. During the month of March the students were able to learn some story telling techniques that improved their oral stories. We enjoyed Mrs. Bratt's brother, Kelly Prestwich, who told some wonderful stories about growing up in Payson. It was fun to participate in the class storytelling festivals and choose winners to tell at the third grade festival held on March 16. The winners from third grade are Jenson Rawlings, Rachel Gordon, Ellie Arnold, and Jessica Johnson. Congratulations.

We began a fairy tale unit that involves additional story telling, reader's theater, and writing stories. We are reading many interesting and unfamiliar fairy tales. Our culminating activity will be a school musical that we will perform in May. There will be two complete casts with lots of speaking and singing parts. The children will try out in April for those parts. Many children have been curious as to what play we are doing. We told them to read this newsletter to find out that we are performing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The third grade classes have participated in the health department's five a day program. They provide a field trip to visit the fruit and vegetable sections of Smith's Food in Orem. We got to taste lots of little known, exotic food in their upstairs conference room. Afterwards, we had a tour of Orem's library. We learned about the fairy tales in the stained glass windows. We had a wonderful time! We enjoyed working with our substitutes Mrs. Hodson and Mrs. Bratt, as well as our student teacher, Mrs. Jenson. We will miss them but are looking forward to having Mrs. Goldthorpe return.

Fourth Grade

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

The fourth grade continues to rock Mount Mahogany. There are so many exciting things going on; we do not know where to begin.

We have all been enjoying our work with Folk and Fairy Tales. We love reading! Some old classics and stories have a spin on them. We like fractured fairy tales.

In math we are focusing our learning on multiplication and division in our unit called Packages and Groups. We are learning several new strategies to solve our problems. You should ask your students to teach some to you! We need all students to be working on their multiplication tables at home so that success is achievable for all.

How we do admire our Utah pioneers. We have been learning so much about the pioneers who settled this great state. We even got to try johnny cakes and corn meal mush, which are both Pioneer foods. As we wrap up this unit of study in social studies, we will begin compiling our Utah books. Any parents who would like to help get in touch with your student’s teacher.

Our Here’s to Utah musical program will be held April 14 at 1:30-2:30 and again that night at 7:00 p.m. We encourage all families to attend. You will be entertained and dazzled by the students’ talent!

We, as a fourth grade team, want to thank all of you for the wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week that we had. What great parents we have at Mount Mahogany. Your students amaze us on a daily basis and you help to make our job just that much easier.

Fifth Grade

The 5th graders enjoyed their field trip to the Utah Symphony. Students are looking forward to performing for the Traveling Show on April 28th. There will be 3 different show times that day. 5th grade teachers would like to thank the parents, students, and PTA for the wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week! The meals and gifts were fantastic! Please remind your child to dress appropriately for the weather. Some children are not wearing a jacket or coat at recess.

Sixth Grade

At the end of March we finished a wonderful World Fair and fashion show. Congratulations to all the sixth graders for their great displays, beautiful costumes and well researched reports. All the hard work showed. In Social Studies we'll be turning our attention to the Middle Ages and castle building. In Math we finish up with fractions, decimals, and percents and turn our attention to circles, area and circumference. In Language/Reading/Writing we took the Direct Writing Assessment. Thanks to Mrs. McArthur for all her preparation in getting everyone ready to write those persuasive essays. Everyone can breath a huge sigh of relief now. Coming up in April we'll be having our maturation program for the boys on April 19th at 2:15 p.m. in the library. (The girls did their program in 5th grade.) Keep up the good work, especially as we prepare for the end of year tests coming up in about a month.

Computer Lab

Ah Spring! With the wonderful weather we should be getting soon, it will be great to get outside again. As we talk about internet safety in the computer lab, we talk about a character called the Numbut on NetSmartz. He spends all of his time playing on the computer or playing video games. He never goes outside and has no friends. Now, I’d probably be one of the first to tell you that computers can be great fun, but we also need to make sure our kids are outside doing other things. At the very least, reading a book instead of watching a screen. Computers are important these days, but there are still many things that are more important.
