Principal's Message

One of our most valuable resources at Mount Mahogany is our school volunteers.  Their contributions of time and energy have helped make our school a vital, harmonious, and happy place to be.

Many of you serve as volunteers in a variety of ways.  A few of them include our take home reading program, working with school-business partnerships, classroom and grade level programs, working one-on-one with individual students and serving on various PTA committees.

In whatever capacity you serve, you can only assist in improving and enriching the lives of our students.  I recently read a book entitled, The Five People You Meet in Heaven. The book is about an individual, his life's experiences, and how certain people influenced his life.  Serving as a volunteer provides many opportunities to enrich and influence the lives of others in positive and constructive ways, not only immediately, but in years to come.

Thank you again for your support and unending service.  You are greatly appreciated!

Mr. Westover

Parents,

Lately the school has experienced increased vandalism in the bathrooms. Because of this we need to restrict the unsupervised time students are in the building. We are asking for your help in several areas to reduce this problem.

  1. Breakfast is served from 8:30 to 8:50 a.m. Please do not send students to school before 8:30.
  2. Students should be dropped off at the northwest (gym side) end of the building.
  3. When the weather is very cold students may stay in the building rather than wait outside. However they are restricted to the north hall where they will be expected to sit quietly. The gym will be opened if more space is needed.
  4. We have found that when students are dropped off at the center doors some students have a tendency to wander the halls.

Most of the students are doing very well following directions, and they are being very cooperative. We appreciate your help in helping your children follow these guidelines.

As always, if there are any questions or clarifications feel free to contact me at school.

Mr. Thomas

Kindergarten

The kindergarten is excited o announce our field trip to the BYU Bean Museum on March 12th. Both the morning and afternoon kindergartens will be attending together in the morning. This field trip will be a great opportunity for the children to discover some of the things they will have learned about during our unit on animals. We would also like to thank all of those parents who participated in our Kindergarten Mid-Year Asseessments. We are grateful for the dedication we have seen in parents to collaborate with teachers in helping their children learn to read this year.

First Grade

The First Grade teachers would like to give a HUGE thanks to all the parents who helped with teacher appreciation week.

On March 8th the first grade will be performing in the student of the month assembly at 9:30.  The theme is honesty, and they have worked very hard to learn each song.

As always, remember to help your child with their take home reading every night!

Second Grade

This past month was quite exciting with Groundhog Day, 100 Day, Valentine's Day, Presidents Day and Teacher Appreciation week! All of the Second Grade teachers would like to thank the PTA and all our wonderful Room Mothers for helping and supporting us! Teacher Appreciation Week was full of fun activities and we all feel very appreciated! We are thankful for all that is done for us.

We are still continuing with the math unit "Putting Together and Taking Apart." We are greatful for the help and support you are giving your student and ask that you continue to do so. It is important for them to be completing and turning in their homework. In the next few weeks we will continue to work on story problems and using 100. In mid March we will be finishing up this unit and will begin a new one titled "How Long? How Far?" This unit deals with a lot of measurement and moving on a grid.

In March, we'll do some fun St. Patrick's Day activities. The third term will end on March 18. Report cards will be sent home on March 26.

Third Grade

The third grades have had a great February and are now ready to SOAR into March! The storytelling festival takes place this month and every 3rd grader needs to choose a fairy tale, folk tale, or humorous story to retell to their class on Fri., Mar 12. Each class will choose 2 students to represent them and tell their story to the whole 3rd grade on Mon. Mar. 15. The winners from the grade-level festival will advance to the school storytelling festival which will be held on Thurs., Mar. 18. More details will be given in class. Mrs. Rutland’s class will go to the Smith’s 5-A-Day field trip on Tues., Mar. 9 and Mrs. Broughton’s class will go on Tues., Mar. 16. We’ll also stop by the Orem Library for a fun story and then lunch in the park. St. Patrick’s Day is coming up on Mar. 17 and we would like to have a baked potato bar in our classes. We’ll be contacting our room moms to help and asking students to bring toppings for our potatoes that day. Looking ahead to Easter in April, please save and bring to school a clean 1 lb. cottage cheese container to make a fun Easter basket in class. Last but not least, we’d like to thank our students and parents for the great teacher appreciation week. We had a blast and enjoyed the great lunches, door decorations, cards, and tokens of appreciation. Thanks a bunch!

Fourth Grade

Extra! Extra! Read all about the fourth grade! And some exciting reading it is! We have been truly busy doing so many wonderful things. We've been reading biographies, making change and planning the mileage
of our in-class road trips, and writing story after story. After Christmas we even started science rotations, which have been running smooth as talc, (Rocks and minerals happens to be one of our science units!) The students have greatly enjoyed the hands-on science experience and experiments! We ask that you as parents keep up the good work at home by reading with your students, supervising their math facts folder, and helping them to remember to bring that homework to school!

Our fourth grade is also privileged to have two student teachers to help present this rich curriculum to your children. Mrs. West is in Mrs. Hillman's class and Miss Whetten is in Miss Nevins' class. We are happy to have them here to help us and are truly grateful for their efforts. The children respond quite well to them.

Our musical talents have been stretched this month. We started with our Steve James performance and moved on to our Student of the Month assembly where we taught the whole school about being a good citizen. Your students were fantastic as they marched into the gym holding American flags. The school was impressed by their behavior and touched by their songs. We also continue to practice our ukuleles, which are the highlight of the students' week. This is part of our intense preparation for our fourth grade history musical that is coming up in April. You need to prepare as well. Prepare to be amazed! On a personal note, we would like to thank all of those who helped to make the Teacher Appreciation Week so special. It meant so much to us to receive lunches, cards, gifts, time to eat breakfast, and our decorated doors. Your support is crucial to our success, and we thank you!

Fifth Grade

Fifth graders are excited to go to the Utah Symphony in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, March 2nd. Students should wear appropriate dress such as dress pants and shirt. Girls are welcome to wear dresses or skirt and blouse. Students may order a school lunch or bring a home lunch. There will be no cost for the event or the transportation.

"The Traveling Show"

The time is fast approaching to dust off the footlights and to tune up the band. The traditional fifth grade (social studies based) performing arts "Traveling Show" is scheduled for April 29th. The month of March will see rehearsals beginning and interest soaring to the top of the scale! Any parents with children from any 5th grade class or Mr. Spencer's 4th grade class are welcome to volunteer to help in any of the following areas: narrator coaching, vocalist coaching, dance, props, costumes, stage crew, or technical staff. "Break a leg!"

The displays and fashion show are always a treat to see. Be sure to schedule time to see them. Computer Lab

We are doing so much in the computer lab right now, everything from working on our math skills to learning how to keyboard, from making slide shows with a digital camera to learning about internet safety. Please ask your child what they are learning and talk with them about it. To help you understand what we are doing, the computer lab now has a web page that can be reached through Mount Mahogany's web site or by going here:
