School Evacuation Procedures
If the school ever needed to be evacuated, the student body would assemble on the east grounds of the school. If needed, our alternative site to assemble would be the LDS Garden Stake Center located at 1028 West 1000 North in Pleasant Grove.

If a major disaster occurred during regular school hours, all teachers and staff members would remain at school to care for students until picked up by parents or authorized individuals. Students who ride the bus would be delivered to their normal bus stops. If they didn’t have access to their homes or emergency homes, they would be delivered back to the school until picked up by parents or authorized individuals.

An emergency release form was included in the packet of information that was sent home on the first day of school. This form lists individuals who would be authorized to pick up your child(ren) if you as the parent were unable to do so, in the case of an emergency. If you have not returned tis form, please do as soon as possible. Extra copies are in the office if you need one.

We will have practice evacuations, lock down, fire, earthquake, etc., periodically throughout the year so staff members and students will be familiar with correct procedures.

The decision to close schools due to weather conditions will be made by the superintendent and local authorities. The rule of thumb is that once school has started, the students will remain at school until the end of the day.

You may listen to or watch one of the local radio or television stations if you have questions whether or not school will be in session.

First Grade

In First Grade, we are busy preparing for our Christmas program.  The students are learning poems from the book, It's Christmas, written by Jack Prelutsky, and are learning many new Christmas songs.  There will be two performances in the gym on Tuesday, December 16.  The first performance will be at 1:30 p.m. for the whole school, followed by an evening performance at 7:00 for parents and family.  WE'RE EXCITED TO PERFORM FOR YOU!

Second Grade

November has been a great learning month for the Second Grade. We are working very hard to develop and fine tune our reading and math skills.

During the upcoming holiday season, the Second Grade will be participating in a "Christmas Around the World" unit. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to study and experience the customs of various cultures. A note will be sent home with further details. Our individual class holiday parties will be on Friday, December 19th.

Third Grade

The third grade has had a busy month! We performed 2 songs for the school at the Student of the Month Assembly: “It’s Hot to Not” and “Take a Stand” to help us remember to be responsible and not get involved with drugs, violence, bullying, and stealing. Three of our classes went to Smith’s in Orem and learned about healthy eating habits through the 5-A-Day program -- the other classes will go in the Spring.

In our rotations, we’ve learned about the first Thanksgiving and what a difficult time our early ancestors had being some of the first Americans, Dental Health and how to care for our teeth, Map Skills, and Prevention Dimension lessons of “Keys” to good manners.

December promises to be a fun month as we prepare for the holidays! We will make gingerbread houses on Dec. 5. Our long-awaited field trip to see “The Nutcracker” takes place on Dec. 17. Students are to dress up for the occasion, practicing their “theater etiquette” skills. Students will study the story of “The Nutcracker,” learn what ballet is and become familiar with Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music!

We want to wish all of our Mt. Mahogany families a Happy Holiday Season!

Fourth Grade

November was a busy month for our fourth grade and December will be just as busy. We still continue our study of the history, geography, and the early people in Utah. For Balanced Literacy, in November we worked on our reading genre of adventure and historical fiction. December’s category will be holiday stories or adventure. We are currently studying our multiplication facts in our math fact booklet that every fourth grade student should be working on with their parents. We are also trying to implement comprehension strategies and reading fluency through guided reading with those readers who are struggling. In November we learned a Thanksgiving Poem called “A Boy’s Remarks to His Stomach” (The Day After Thanksgiving). In December we will work on learning, “’Twas the night before Christmas.” We have been working on a variety of art techniques in preparing special fourth grade Christmas gifts for parents. The fourth grade is introducing a new keyboarding program to the school called Alpha Smart. This program places a small computer keyboard on each child’s desk for twenty minutes a day. During this period the children are taught keyboarding skills. Each class keeps the portable set of computer keyboards for twenty-one days. This should be a tremendous help in building keyboarding skills for our students.

Student elves have been busily producing advertising, product, and decor for this project. The Grand Opening for 5th graders and their parents will be on December 8th at 1:30. Please support the Christmas Store and come shop on December 9th-11th from 8:00-4:00.

Sixth Grade

On Nov. 21 the 6th grade held its D.A.R.E. graduation. The entire class graduated after having completed a 10 week course about drug and violence awareness. Every student wrote an essay about what they learned and pledged to stay drug free. A big thanks to Officer Carsen for teaching the class. This month we will be studying Ancient Greece in Social Studies, learn about Outcomes and Probability in Math and prepare for the Science Fair in Science. Be sure to ask your student about the Science Fair, which will happen on January 21st. It sounds far away, but it is never to early to pick a topic and start preparing. Every student received a packet of information about the Fair. Parents, please help us with our reading goals by signing your student's reading bookmark every night. It only takes a minute and it can provide big dividends in reading progress. Finally, we hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season. We are proud of your children and their great school spirit. The children far exceeded their goal for the school canned goods drive and there's lots of excitement in the air for the Penny War coming up.

Student Council

Way to Go Mount Mahogany! Because of YOU our canned food drive was a huge success. As a school, we collected 3,796 food items this year. We beat last year by 2,214 items! That is incredible. In fact, the Food Bank had to make 2 trips just to carry all the food to the pantry. Thank you for your generous donations.

Announcing the event you have all been waiting for . . . . . .
THE PENNY WAR IS COMING!!!!!
Yes, the time has finally arrived, the most popular activity of last year is getting a second try. For three days only, Dec. 15, 16, and 17 we will Penny War for the needy. Every penny (and other money) collected will be donated to KSL’s Quarters for Christmas. Your job is to bring your pennies and “bombs” (any silver money like nickels and dimes) so we can beat last year’s donation of $1,476.00. We will have 2 winning classes this year: the class who wins the most points and the class that generates the most money total. Get ready to war!
